Pistachios & Blood Sugar Management

Pistachios are an ideal snack for adults and children. Not only are they convenient for taking in your lunch box or carrying in your handbag, they also provide a variety of nutrients, including copper, manganese, selenium, iron, zinc, riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin E, folate and many more!

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of studies showing the potential benefits of eating nuts, including pistachios, and on blood glucose. One reason for this may be due to chromium which contributes to maintaining normal blood glucose. Pistachios are a high source of chromium.

Pistachios & Diabetes

While there are no health claims in relation to pistachios and diabetes, there is emerging research to suggest that pistachios have a glucose- and insulin-lowering effect and promote a healthier metabolic profile (based on consuming 57g/pistachios daily)1.

Research suggests that the nutrient profile of pistachios, including protein, healthy fats and fiber, may have a beneficial effect on health. One study which explored the effects of consuming a pistachio snack versus a refined carbohydrate snack (pretzel) found body weight and fatness decreased in the pistachio snack group.2 While this was only a small investigation it highlights that pistachios can be consumed as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
